Stephen Gaterell, Chief Executive Officer

Stephen Gaterell is the CEO of Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange (DGCX). Gaterell has over 30 years of experience in the banking, financial services and derivatives trading sectors.

Gaterell previously occupied senior positions in Merrill Lynch, UBS and Goldman Sachs, where he was responsible for implementing new business plans, structuring and building up the visibility and profile of the banks.

He has also served as board member of EURONEXT /LIFFE.

Gaterell was the financial and commodity trader for his own start-up trading company Gaterell Pty Ltd, established in 2001 in Australia.




Gaurang Desai, Chief Operating Officer

Gaurang Desai, a derivatives market specialist with over 15 years experience in handling variety of roles. Gaurang has been heading Operations since launch of DGCX in November 2005. Prior to this engagement, Gaurang was involved in market development initiatives in areas such as Commodities, Equities, Securities depository and B2B online marketplaces with the National Stock Exchange of India, National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange and Reliance Group.

Gaurang brings unparalleled experience in the areas of market design, risk management, clearing & settlement and operational competence for a demutualised electronic exchange. In his role as Chief Operating Officer, he is committed to making DGCX the market of choice for its market participants by continuously bringing global best practices to DGCX.





Samir Shah, Chief Business Officer

Samir Shah is the Chief Business Officer of the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange (DGCX). Shah has over two decades of experience in building institutions and market infrastructure. Prior to joining DGCX, he was the CEO of Mumbai-based Universal Commodities Exchange (UCX).

Prior to this, Shah worked at global information company Thomson Reuters for 17 years. In 2010, he was appointed as the Global Head of Business Planning and Operations for a new Inside-Sales unit at Thomson Reuters called Direct. In 2009, as the Head of Business Operations for Thomson Reuters Asia and a member of the Asian Leadership Team based in Singapore, he successfully transformed the business to focus on customer needs.

In 2006, Shah led Reuters’ India operations as the Managing Director for Reuters in South Asia. In this position, he doubled revenue, integrated the Indian Quotation Systems business and merged the India operations of Thomson into Thomson Reuters. In his previous roles, he led the Treasury and Fixed Income Business for Reuters Asia, and partnered with large global market makers to launch RTFX and RTFI, the dealer-customer FX and Fixed Income Trading Systems in Asia.

 Prior to that, as Head of Sales for ASEAN & South Asia, Shah developed trusted relationships with several large banking customers helping them in areas of trading systems, Risk Management, and Foreign Exchange pricing.

Shah began his career as an investment banker in Mumbai helping companies unlock value through public offerings and buy-out deals.

He is an MBA in Finance and has completed an Advanced Management Program from Wharton.


Rajesh Balaram, Chief Financial Officer

Rajesh Balaram, Chief Financial Officer, has been associated with DGCX since 2008 and was appointed Company Secretary in 2010.

Rajesh has over 15 years of experience in finance, including internal auditing and management consultancy across diverse industries such as – commodities exchange, oil and gas (both upstream and downstream), utilities, shipping, manufacturing and construction. Prior to joining DGCX, Rajesh worked in a London and Irish listed upstream oil company headquartered in UAE, as Head of Internal Reporting and Assurance managing treasury operations. 





Tony Day, Chief Compliance Officer

Tony Day, Chief Compliance Officer, joined DGCX in August 2005. Tony came to the Emirates early in 1999; where he joined the UAE Central Bank’s Banking Supervision and Examinations Department.

Prior to this, he enjoyed a career in London spanning 20 years; working as a trader in both the commodities and securities markets and as a broker/dealer of exchange traded commodities derivatives and financial futures.

In his current role as CCO for a Self Regulating Organisation, Tony’s diverse and relevant experience equips him to provide a modern, risk-based approach to the effective supervision of Exchange participants.




Basab Banerjee, Chief Technology Officer

Basab Banerjee, Chief Technology Officer, has been associated with the Exchange since inception in 2005. He overlooks the technology initiatives and IT operations at DGCX.

Basab has more than 14 years of varied experience in the design & deployment of Application & Exchange Technology. Prior to joining DGCX, his expertise has been instrumental for setting up different world-class Exchanges like Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), IBS-Forex and Inter-connected Stock Exchange of India Ltd.
